~ Gospel of John
Fr. Luke assists his students to develop an appreciation of their own individual and particular ways to follow Christ, whether it is to serve in the church as lay or ordained ministers. His interest lies in Roman Catholic spirituality, for the religious, lay and priest, showing the intersection between spirituality and daily life. That the outcome of a life of prayer and receiving the sacraments should lead to a greater awareness of God's presence and a greater practice of charity and justice, so we can speak about a lived theology. Fr. Luke evokes several teaching styles - lecture, practicum and student reflection - in order to deepen his students' knowledge of theology, growth in faith and awareness in Christ.
The courses Fr. Luke teaches are:
- Confessional Ministry
- Celebration of Sacraments
- Sacraments
- Theological Virtues
- Mariology
Fr. Luke is currently working on a comprehensive book on the History, Theology and the Spirituality of the Sacraments in the Catholic Church. He is putting together in one volume each sacrament in terms of its life in the development of the Church. Fr. Luke discusses what the sacraments say about God and the revelation of God. He writes about the connections between Church and the Sacraments, that sacrament is a revelation, which is a revelation of Church, which is a revelation of Christ. Finally he delves into spirituality, the believer's faith journey, how it is qualified and made distinctive in faith and the reception of the sacraments.
Fr. Luke spends most of his time teaching and preaching. He teaches at D.S.P.T and at St. Patrick's Seminary for the Archdiocese of San Francisco. Each spring Fr. Luke teaches at the Pontifical University of St. Thomas Aquinas in Rome. He also teaches a six-week series for the School of Pastoral Ministry in San Francisco. He is an instructor in the novitiate program in the Western Dominican Province at St. Dominic's. For the last ten years Fr. Luke served in the Catholic Retrouvaille Program, helping marriages through the diocese of Sacramento.
