“… to equip the holy ones for the work of ministry, for building up the body of Christ.” (Eph 4:12)
Fr Peter is passionate about strong, competent, and holy leadership in the Church. He teaches Field Education and Pastoral Theology at DSPT, bringing with him 24 years of ordained pastoral ministry experience. As a pastor of a parish, Provost of the Oratory of St. Philip Neri in Monterey and Director of New Pentecost Catholic Ministries, he participates in the spiritual, practical and intellectual formation of lay people and clergy.
At DSPT, his focus is to help prepare persons for both ordained and lay ministry in the practical world of real venues of Church life – and do it in a way that promotes the spiritual values of God’s Kingdom and based on a solid theological foundation.
Fr Peter has a great interest in the ministries of healing, evangelization and teaching. Jesus’ ministry brought the power of the God’s Spirit to the physical, emotional-psychological and spiritual dimensions of human existence, always with the purpose of building God’s Kingdom and bringing people into communion. Yet the ultimate embodiment of healing took place in Jesus’ death and resurrection. Likewise, a sharing in the Paschal Mystery by a minister brings power and authenticity into pastoral ministry.
These same dimensions were bequeathed to the Church for the extension of God’s Reign. This movement of the Spirit has followed institutionally in the administration of the sacraments. Yet, in addition to these, many people are endowed with charisms supplementing and complementing their natural talents. Part of the formation process is the recognition and development of these gifts, and the harmonizing them in the Body of Christ in a way that is Christ-like, mature and leads to communion.
The formative activities of Fr Peter’s ministry, done with ministry teams, include institutes, retreats and seminars for lay leaders in prayer, growth in character, worship, aspects of leadership. In addition, Fr Peter often preaches at conferences, leads worship and healing services. In Monterey, he is the rector of the Holy Spirit Chapel, a center of spirituality and counseling, where group and one-on-one ministry is conducted.
His formal education includes:
M. Div. Dominican School of Philosophy and Theology
M.A. in Religious Education, University of San Francisco
M.A. in Counseling Psychology, University of Santa Clara
S.T.L. in Sacramental Theology, Jesuit School of Theology
Fr Peter’s ministry has taken him throughout North America, Mexico, Central and South America, Europe and Africa.
