Archbishop Alemany Award for Christian Service
Joseph Sadoc Alemany, Dominican friar and pioneer, was ordained Bishop of Monterey
in 1850, and was appointed the first Archbishop of San Francisco in 1853. Attentive
to the needs of the people of California, Archbishop Alemany called upon his
fellow Dominicans to serve in preaching, teaching and parochial ministries.
Every year, in his name, The Dominican School of Philosophy and Theology recognizes
Roman Catholics who have distinguished themselves by exemplary service to the
Church.
