Education:

BA in Philosophy, Don Bosco College; MDiv and MA in Theology, Pontifical College Josephinum; MA in Pastoral Studies, Seattle University; STD, Salesian Pontifical University of Rome, Italy.

Biography:

I was born in East St. Louis, Illinois. My family moved back to my mother's native state of California in 1960 where I went to Catholic elementary school at St. Dominic's in Eagle Rock, CA. From Eagle Rock my family moved to Rosemead on the east side of Los Angeles so that my older brother could attend Don Bosco Technical Institute. I also attended Don Bosco and it was there that I met the Salesians. Growing up in a vibrant and active diocesan parish both in Eagle Rock and in Pico Rivera, the call to the Salesians almost followed naturally and logically. I professed as a Salesian in 1977, two years out of high school. I was ordained a Salesian priest in 1986 and have served in many capacities as a high school teacher, the chaplain and staff of a boarding school in Edmonton, Alberta Canada; the Vocation Director of my province; the Youth Ministry Delegate of my province; the first director/president of St. Francis Central Coast Catholic High School in Watsonville, and now as adjunct professor in spiritual theology for the Dominican School of Philosophy and Theology as part of the Institute of Salesian Studies at Don Bosco Hall in Berkeley.

Research Interests:

Fr. John is currently working on a text for use in Salesian lay and religious formation projected as Salesian Spirituality and Chastity: An Examination of Salesian Chastity and Maturity with portions to be published in forthcoming issues of Journal of Salesian Studies. Combing through the work of Wendy M. Wright, Fr. Joseph Boenzi, Fr. Arthur Lenti and other similar authors, Fr. John is working on a "Salesian Christology" and hopes to link such a study to the relevance of a Salesian Spirituality and understanding of Christ for the youth of the world today.
