Aquinas Lecture and Symposia Overview

Every year the Dominican School of Philosophy and Theology hosts The Aquinas Lecture with a reception following. In keeping with the mission of DSPT - to engage contemporary scholarship with the wisdom of tradition, especially as exemplified by St. Thomas Aquinas - our faculty nominate a scholar to present a paper in which the thought and method of Aquinas are applied to a contemporary issue.

Aquinas Lecture 2013: Fr. Augustine Thompson, OP "Baptismal Theology and Practice in the Age of St. Thomas Aquinas"

Fr. Augustine examined new discoveries about the liturgical and social significance of baptism in the cities of thirteenth-century Italy. These developments were compared with the development of the theology of baptism from the twelfth century to Thomas Aquinas in the late thirteenth.

Aquinas Lecture 2012: Dr. Michael Tkacz "Albert the Great and the New Aristotelianism: A Turning Point in the Western Intellectual Tradition"

It is widely known that St. Albert the Great is a very important historical figure but do people know what he actually did? Dr. Tkacz illustrated the ways in which the work of St. Albert represents a turning point between two distinct stages of Western intellectual development.

Aquinas Lecture 2011: Fr. Bryan Kromholtz, OP "The Dead in Christ Will Rise: Thomas Aquinas and Current Ideas on the Time of the Resurrection"

When will the resurrection of the dead occur? Fr. Kromholtz shows how the focus on the problem of the "interim state" may obscure significant aspects of Christian eschatology, aspects that are prominent in Thomas's account of the time of the resurrection.

Aquinas Lecture 2010: Bruce Marshall, PhD "Christ and Israel: An Unresolved Question in Catholic Theology"

Dr. Marshall offered ideas on constructive contributions from Catholic theology that work to resolve the tension between two basic affirmations of the Catholic faith: the universal mission of Christ and his Church, and the irrevocable election of Israel – the undying fidelity of God to the Jewish people.

Aquinas Lecture 2009: Marga Vega, PhD "The Ontology of Art: An Anthropological Perspective"

Dr. Vega is currently an Assistant Professor of Philosophy at DSPT. She earned her Ph.D from the University of Valladolid, Spain. Prof. Vega's main interests are in cognition and the intersection of cognition with other fields like language (metaphor), aesthetics and metaphysics. Aquinas Lecture 2008: Eleonore Stump, PhD "Thomas Aquinas and the Problem of Human Suffering"

Eleonore Stump is The Robert J. Henle Professor of Philosophy at Saint Louis University, where she has taught since 1992. She received a PhD in medieval studies and medieval philosophy from Cornell University in 1975.

Aquinas Symposium 2007: "St. Albert the Great, Teacher"

In celebration of the 75th Anniversary of the founding of the College of St. Albert the Great, Three scholars were invited to DSPT to present papers relating to the theme of "St. Albert the Great, Teacher" in celebration of the 75th anniversary of the founding of The College of Saint Albert the Great.

Aquinas Lecture 2007: Thomas S. Hibbs, PhD "Everything that Rises Must Converge: Aquinas"s Theological Re-formation of the Cardinal Virtues"

The 2007 Aquinas Lecture was given on March 13 by Dr. Thomas S. Hibbs, Distinguished Professor of Ethics & Culture and Dean of the Honors College at Baylor University.
