American Maritain Association Conference - Br. Justin Gable, OP

DSPT - Br. Justin Gable, OPThis past October, it was my privilege to attend the 36th Annual American Maritain Association Conference held in Philadelphia. The theme of the conference was “Art and Intuition,” focusing on a short work of the same name published by Jacques Maritain in 1926. The papers presented at the conference explored various aspects of Maritain’s account of art and artistic intuition, but also discussed Maritain’s contributions to metaphysics, epistemology, ethics, and politics in a larger Thomistic perspective. At the conference, Msgr. John F. Wippel was honored with the AMA’s Award for Scholarly Excellence, and Tony Simon, son of the great Thomist Yves R. Simon, was posthumously awarded the AMA’s Founder’s Award for his tireless years of service. The next American Maritain Association Conference will be held at Providence College in Providence, Rhode Island in March 2014.

DSPT - Dr. Michael TorreFounded in 1977, the American Maritain Association is a nonprofit scholarly association dedicated to understanding and building upon the philosophy of Jacques Maritain and the realist tradition to which he belongs. Beginning this year, it is my honor to serve as Vice-President of the American Maritain Association, together with GTU/DSPT alumnus Dr. Michael Torre, Professor of Philosophy at the University of San Francisco, who was elected as the ninth president of the association.
