President's Corner

Farewell Remarks for Fr. Richard Schenk, OP

Fr. Michael Sweeney, OP

Alumni of DSPT serve both the Church and society far beyond the boundaries of the Western Dominican Province.  So, for example, Fr. Michael Sherwin, OP succeeded Fr. Servais-Théodore Pinckaers, OP to the chair of moral theology at Fribourg, in Switzerland.  Fr. Robert Christian, OP has taught for many years at the Angelicum in Rome, where he is Associate Dean.  Fr. Gregory Tatum, OP is Professor at the EcoleBiblique et Archéologique in Jerusalem.  Now it is with both genuine delight and sincere regret that we announce the appointment of Fr. Richard Schenk, OP of our faculty to be President of Katholische Universitaet Eichstaett-Ingolstadt, the only Catholic university in Germany.  Fr. Richard’s term as president will begin on October 1.  Fr. Richard is already one of the most distinguished theologians in America.  He is a scholar of international reputation who has been a member of the European Academy of Sciences and Arts since 1991, having served for ten years as Director of the Hannover Institute of Philosophical Research before coming to DSPT on 1992.  In 2007 he was elected the founding President of the Academy of Catholic theology.  In 2004 The Master of the Order of Preachers conferred upon Fr. Richard the degree Master of Sacred Theology, the highest academic honor in the Order. As well as being a scholar with impeccable credentials, Fr. Richard is deeply solicitous of his students, of whom he is both friend and mentor.  Robert Spaemann, one of the most noted German theologians, commented on learning of his appointment that Fr. Richard “is a person of great charisma and the talent to win friends.”    We will very much miss Fr. Richard’s contribution to the academic and community life of DSPT and of GTU.  We offer to him  our prayers and congratulations and send our best wishes to the Catholic University of Eichstaett-Ingolstadt who, we know, will be in very good hands.
