St. Thomas and Sartre Walk into a French Café: Aquinas on Freedom and the Meaning of Existence

Aquinas in Conversation with Contemporary Culture

Open and free to the public. Coffee and pastries at 9:30 am, presentation 10am - 12pm including Q&A.

Please join us for a look at what St. Thomas Aquinas would say to John Paul Sartre about the meaning of our existence and the radical freedom of the human person if they were to sit down to a cup of coffee.

This presentation is designed to appeal to a wide audience of interested students, religious and the broader community.  It can be both an accessible introduction to St. Thomas and an enjoyable application for those already invested in his teachings to bring them into conversation with contemporary thought. There will be time for Q&A with Fr. Justin after the talk.

St. Thomas Aquinas is known as Doctor Communis (the Common Doctor) because of the breadth, clarity, and significance of his thought. He is heralded as one of the most influential theologians in the Church and is central to the education and mission of DSPT and the Dominican Order.

Fr. Justin Gable, OP is Assistant Professor of Philosophy at DSPT and a member of The American Maritain Association, The American Catholic Philosophical Association, The American Philosophical Association and Society for Phenomenology and Existential Philosophy.
