Person in Neuroscience: Consciousness, Reason and Free Will

Available Fall 2018

This seminar will investigate various challenges that arise from neuroscience (and artificial intelligence). Can the findings of brain science demonstrate that we do not have free will? Can machines instantiate consciousness and intentionality? What is the relation of firing neurons to perception and conscious awareness? Where is consciousness? How do we understand the currently developing interface of mind, brain and machines? Is our thinking determined by material processes? Where does Aquinas’ analysis of mental faculties fit into brain science and neurophysiology? This seminar will engage invited outside speakers who are working in the field (particularly in the Bay Area), including a panel discussion.

Seminar coordinator: Marga Vega, PhD
